An end to summer is in sight with the nights and early mornings drawing in with less daylight and a drop in temperatures. With the changing season a football fans thoughts turn to their teams first game of the year .Last years jumper , jersey , guernsey is pulled out of the wardrobe and inspected . The questions has it got another season in it? , are the sponsors too dated ?but mainly will it still fit ?are asked .The sponsors may come and go, as will some of the mascots ( who would have thought the Lions would run out with a new Lion ).The team colours may appear a bit darker or lighter each passing year but one thing remains the same and will never go out of fashion ,at round one every ardent footy fan will be out in their teams colours wearing their jumper , jersey or guernsey.Sometimes these jumpers have often had a short respite over the warmer months but the humble jumper has definitely become more of a fashion trend and wearable iconic item of clothing over time .Of one thing you are assured , the jumper ,whether temporarily rested , newly purchased or freshly washed will be proudly on display at the first bounce of the Sherrin .

Football jumpers , jerseys , guernseys are rapidly becoming highly collectable . As fashions and styles change so does the humble footy jumper . Long gone are the woollen , knitted , long sleeve variety with button up front and club names sewn on front and numbers sewn on back . These jumpers branded a club and a team and whilst not high fashion made a club instantly recognisable and bonded the players to each other, their club and their code . Many a mum despaired as when faced with the mammoth task of washing team jumpers they battled the soiling , the wet winter weather , thickness of the wool and the near impossiblity of getting the jumper dry for match day . Today the modern slick polyester version is usually sleeveless has printed on everything ie numbers , logos , sponsors , names etc, is able to be washed and dried overnight and takes plenty of wear and tear . However the older style jumpers are enjoying a renaissance in their twilight years as collectors world wide hanker for the old school team jumper they played in, or their teams old strip . These jumpers often plastered in unfashionable sponsors logos for tobacco companies and breweries are highly prized . The items are much sort after and collectors and fans alike will pay a high price to secure a much coveted item such as an old Fitzroy Lions jumper . Will the new cartoon like logo of the Lions be as popular or collectable as the the Old Lions strip ? Only time will tell but every woolly jumper forever enshrined under glass has a story to tell which can only grow in stature as time goes by . Will they become the true legends of the game and gaze on in horror at the modern incarnations of this famed piece of sporting apparel ?

Oh when the Saints come marching in

Will it rain on the Cats parade
Its come down to the final two top sides of the 2009 afl season playing for the ultimate prize .Geelong are pumped and confident further buoyed by Gary Ablett Jnr’s brownlow medal win of Monday night .Businesses and homes in and around Geelong , the surrounding areas and country towns are proudly displaying their colours.Cars are flying local newspaper issue flags . St Kilda and surrounds by contrast is eerily quiet its team going about their business quietly and methodically . All are down playing the hype and sentiment of their 09 tilt at the flag .Many remember the debacle of the 97 campaign and for a team with a poor premiership and playing history they are stoically getting on with it .The St Kilda Town Hall has a flag out and 2 pubs are sporting wrap around red black and white tri colours .The Sacred Heart Windsor Op Shop has expanded its window display to include more Saints paraphernalia but the religious icons remain as silent witness to a modern day miracle if the Saints win . Come saturday evening the contest will be decided and whether its the cocky Cats or the sanguine Saints who prevail it promises to be an epic battle the like of which has not been witnessed at the G for a long time .

And now there are four . Its down to the final four football teams competing this weekend for the chance to win the ultimate prize of a premiership cup. All the remaining teams are Victorian . They are Geelong with the most recent finals success in 2007. Collingwood , arguably the most famous AFL club with a huge local and global fan base .The remaining two teams , the St Kilda and Western Bulldogs are the sentimental favourites .Neither has won more than one premiership with the former tasting victory 43 years ago and the latter 55 years ago .The Doggies and Sainters play off in a friday night game which means one will be eliminated . The Magpies who incredibly bounced back to score a one kick victory against the Crows tackle the Cats on Saturday .Whatever the outcome the thrills and spills of this season culminate in a rip roaring Grand Final of which there can only be one winner . Will it be the hapless Saints who have put in a superlative season . Can the Doggies snatch it and bring the cup home to a beleagured West . Is it the tenacious Magpies who seem to be able to pull something out of the box come September . Or ultimately will the Cats prevail heralding more success for that lean , mean playing machine .Whatever the outcome fans everywhere will be glued to TV ’s , big screens or radios world wide barracking , hoping or praying that their team gets over the line .

Its finally arrived, Finals time. That great battle that teams prepare for all season. An arena for players to display their great aerobic capacity and superlative skills. Fans either rejoice or commiserate at this time of year. All are either going, watching or barracking and all are wearing their teams colours regardless of who’s playing . Win , lose or draw the gargantuan struggle has begun. Its Spring and that last saturday in september the G will be full and a feeling of general hysteria will pervade melbourne town. Some are confident some are scared but all are hoping their team will get over the line at 4.40pm sat 26 sept. .Arresting is the scene depicted in the Sacred Heart Op Shop Windsor of the Saints colours posed beside religious icons .It indicates that those south of the river will call on divine intervention to break the 43yr drought for their much loved team. It would be truly a miracle if the Saints can replicate that miraculous 1 point victory of 66 and come marching home to St Kilda with the premiership cup . Needs must and when the going gets tough the tough get going and a little prayer could only help a team named the Saints who have a history of being sinners .The Doggies too have been a long time between drinks and the West will come alive if they snatch it and return the cup to the Scraysters who have waited 55yrs to taste the ultimate victory.
If it is a Grand Final between these two sentimental favourites the roof will come down on the final siren at the G .
Let the Games begin.
