Indigenous Round Football Jumpers , Jerseys , Guernseys

Friday, May 31st, 2013

Indigenous Round of the AFL fixture ignited passion  , and precipitated changes , to the traditional football jumper , jersey , guernsey .

The first game of the fixture saw Collingwood being soundly beaten by the Swans , on  friday night footy at the MCG   .  Twenty  years ago , at the Saints vs Pies game at Victoria Park ,  Collingwood fans  racially abused Saint Nicky Winmar , who , in retaliation  raised his footy jumper , and pointed to the colour of his skin . In a startling scene of Deja Vu , a similar incident occurred at the  Pies Vs Swans match.  Swans player , Adam Goodes , pointed out a young Collingwood fan who racially vilified him . She was ejected from the ground in the dying moments of the last quarter .  In an eventful week , Collingwood FC President  , Eddie McGuire also made a racially inappropriate  comment on Melbourne Radio    .

In a growing  trend , three clubs changed their traditional footy jumpers , for the indigenous round . The Crows adopted a black strip to replace their original dark blue , along with their usual red and yellow, to imitate the Koori flag . Fremantle Dockers used their original colours of purple and white to create an effective allover design  of aboriginal artwork , in which boomerangs featured heavily . Richmond Tigers building on their indigenous artwork designs of previous years , incorporated a Dreamtime theme of Boomerangs , into their traditional yellow sash on a black background .

Game Times

The AFL are scheduling Monday Night Footy again for season 2013 . Saints play the Blues tonight at 7.40pm in Etihad Stadium . The experiment proved popular last year and has left fans hankering for more night games . Happy to please the AFL have pitted the Cats against the Bombers in a traditional Friday night blockbuster at Etihad .

Interestingly there is only one game on this weekend at the traditional Saturday afternoon time slot when the Lions play the Eagles at the Gabba . All other games , including interstate games are at various timeslots including twilight ,  night or early afternoon . Is it a bold marketing initiative by the AFL   ? Or is it simply a clever merchandising ploy to get  people to as many games as possible ?  It could just be to meet the media requirements of televising , recording and broadcasting all games . Possibly there are  a myriad of reasons but fans are the winners and they love getting to the footy wearing their football jumpers , jerseys , guernseys , and cheering their team to victory .

Footy Legends

I went and saw the stage show ” Barassi ” at the weekend .Followers of  VFL / AFL football are familiar with this name . What prompted me to go was seeing Ron Barassiwalking along the beach path at Elwood beach with a few of his pals . He had a determined stride and had raised a sweat on the cool autumn morning . The show encompassed his life achievements in football , including playing and coaching Melbourne Football Club , his  secession to Carlton , premiership victory at North Melbourne and trailblazing at the Sydney Swans . Many vintage football jumpers , jerseys , guernseys , were used in the production , well loved relics of a golden past and as tribute to a dead set footy legend .

Elsewhere Barassi ‘s first team the Demons were thrashed by his second the Blues . Perhaps the Dees need some Barass magic at the moment ! Saints run of losses continued , as did the Lions , Suns , Tigers , GWS , Crows and Bulldogs . Bombers and Cats rule on top of ladder with no losses followed by Power , Swans and Hawks with only one loss ,then come  Freo , Magpies and  Blues taking up remaining spots in the eight .
