The Red and Black Bombers Guernsey

Friday, December 18th, 2015

In 2010 the AFL informed the Bombers they needed a clash strip different to their traditional team colours of red and black . The club opted for red, black and grey. The grey came from the background of their logo and was deemed as a heritage strip by the Club. In 2013 the AFL decided the Bombers could revert to their traditional strip of red and black for all matches.

The Bombers fans know their team are always wearing red and black football jumpers, jerseys, guernseys. These colours are the traditional team colours of the Club, dating from 1896, when they  joined the VFL, which later became the AFL.

Will the red, black and grey footy jumpers, jerseys, guernseys become collectors items? Probably. Time will tell.

A Jersey is the piece of sporting apparel worn by a team player of AFL Football, that traditionally displays the players name and number. Often made from sleek polyester, or fabric designed to soak up sweat and resist wear and tear, the jersey, is a popular garment for on and off field wear. Fans, supporters and players alike wear them. Players of a particular sporting code wear them to identify themselves to fans, teammates and media, and supporters to show their love and support of their club.

Brightly coloured, aerodynamically designed, and expertly sewn, the emblazoned jersey is a vital part of the players kit.  Fans wanting to show support and to emulate the style of their favourite player also wear them. Many get them signed by the team players at match time, and proudly wear them to social functions, or around town, and parade them on match day.

Guernsey

Guernsey, a British term used to describe fishing attire, designed to keep the cold and wet out whilst fishermen ply their trade. The secret to the weaving was the hard twist given to the natural wool fibres in an effort to repel sea spray, maintain warmth, and provide a comfortable yet long wearing garment suitable for a hard life of toil at sea in damp conditions.

The modern AFL footy guernsey is vastly different, and provides a hard wearing, long living protection of another type. Todays version is often manufactured in China from durable, synthetic, polyester fabric. The most popular style is sleeveless and is fashioned in vivid team colours sporting sponsors logos, players names and numbers. It is fashioned to resist moisture, of the sweat variety, brought on by players on field exertions. Its ability to resist spray may be called into validity when the player is receiving some helpful advice from the coach or some side line barracking from ardent fans.
