With the advent of televised games, and games played at various times of the day and night it was inevitable that a variation on the humble football jumper, jersey, guernsey became necessary.

Football commentators, fellow players, fans, watchers and listeners, unable to be at the game needed to be able to differentiate between the players of each club.

Most clubs have adopted an away or clash strip.  It uses their teams basic colours but also uses white, grey or expands on one of the traditional colours.

A good example of this are the Richmond Tigers football jumper, jersey, guernsey that has a greater use of yellow in their away strip than that of the traditional home guernsey. St Kilda Saints football club have employed a greater use of the colour white. Essendon Bombers football club have incorporated the  use of the colour grey into their away strip .

Originally mums, sisters, aunts or whoever could sew, lovingly embellished the afl supporters jumper, with the desired number. It involved cutting out the number from fabric, of one or two numerals, carefully placing them on the vacant back section of the jumper, designed for this purpose, and either hand stitching or machine sewing them on.

Fast forward to 2017 and the number on the back of the jumper is now sublimated on, with the official afl logo across the bottom of them. The humble favourite player number has become a slick innovation, and official licensing product of the AFL merchandise team.

Over a period of time AFL clubs have evolved the use of special football jumpers, jerseys, guernseys to commenorate significant events in the clubs history.

Originally confined to the home and away clash series of jumpers, now they are used for celebrations, special matches, fundraisers and to draw attention to specific causes.

Stkilda have played in a purple guernsey to highlight captain, Nick Riewoldt's sister Maddie, and her fatal battle with cancer. All clubs have participated in the Dreamtime series of guernseys to show respect, and honour the contribution that indigenous players have made to AFL football.

Carlton Football Club started the trend of wearing non traditional jumpers back in 1997, when they donned a light blue guernsey, to celebrate the launch of a new flavour of M&M. They were a CFC sponsor at that time.

Anzac day matches have been addressed by the clubs wearing an Anzac insignia or logo on the front of the guernsey, as  worn in the Saints versus Swans, Anzac day game in New Zealand. Collingwood and Essendon have a badge on the front of their guernseys to commenorate the diggers for their epic Anzac day clash at the MCG.
