Clubs promote sponsors for financial gain . Previously these sponsors were alcohol or tobacco companies considered highly inappropriate as both significantly damage health .

Sponsors come and go , team colours and mascots are forever .

Each football season sponsors will pay money to an AFL football club .This is so they can be featured on their all players clothing particularly their jumper , jersey , guernsey .They are receiving advertising and exposure of their company name in a unique way .

Millions of dollars are invested by companies who hope to receive wide exposure in this way .Clubs benefit substantially by signing lucrative deals which offer great financial benefit .

Tobacco companies and alcohol producers are no longer considered appropriate sponsors of sporting clubs .

Previously the breweries CUB , Tooheys or Tooths featured on many jumpers, jerseys , guernseys .

CUB promoted their brand on the front of the Brisbane Lions jumper , jersey , guernsey .These are now highly collectable .

Tobacco companies boldy promoted their sponsorship on jumpers , jerseys , guernseys.

Phillip Morris supported the St Kilda Saints .These jumpers , jerseys , guernseys with this sponsorship logo is still worn by ardent fans.

The pragmatic Saints also promoted Tooheys Brewery on the same jumper, jersey , guernsey .

Healthy Saints and their fans smoked and drank and were happy to promote both .

In these days of "political correctness ", a jumper , jersey , guernsey will promote anything but beer and cigarettes.

The purchaser may be a parent who wants to dress their baby in the jumper they wore as a child or something similiar to it .

These older style jumpers are enjoying a renaissance in their twilight years as collectors world wide hanker for the old school team jumper they played in, or their teams old strip .

Amateur teams who want to get together for a friday night game after work all want to wear them .Kids at the game who play kick to kick after the match want them.

These jumpers were often plastered in unfashionable sponsors logos for tobacco companies and breweries. They can be dated from a period by the sponsors logo , its age , and whether the company still exists. Often the sponsors logo will add to the value of the jumper and make it more highly prized .

The old style jumpers , jerseys , guernseys are much sort after and collectors and fans alike will pay a high price to secure a much coveted item .Old Fitzroy Lions and South Melbourne or Footscray jumpers are in great demand.

A woolly jumper usually tells a story , has a history and can often evoke a fond memory from the most ardent fan. Today they can be enshrined under glass to preserve them .

It would appear that the old style footy jumper will only grow in popularity as time goes by .

They can become part of yours and AFL history. Get grandpa , Uncle Cyril or cousin Roy to get it out from under the bed or down from the attic and wear it with pride . You might be surprised with the comments it gets and the offers you are made !

Football jumpers , jerseys , guernseys are rapidly becoming highly collectable . As fashions and styles change so does the humble footy jumper . Long gone are the woollen , knitted , long sleeve variety with button up front and club names sewn on front and numbers sewn on back . These jumpers branded a club and a team and whilst not high fashion made a club instantly recognisable and bonded the players to each other, their club and their code . Many a mum despaired as when faced with the mammoth task of washing team jumpers they battled the soiling , the wet winter weather , thickness of the wool and the near impossiblity of getting the jumper dry for match day . Today the modern slick polyester version is usually sleeveless has printed on everything ie numbers , logos , sponsors , names etc, is able to be washed and dried overnight and takes plenty of wear and tear . However the older style jumpers are enjoying a renaissance in their twilight years as collectors world wide hanker for the old school team jumper they played in, or their teams old strip . These jumpers often plastered in unfashionable sponsors logos for tobacco companies and breweries are highly prized . The items are much sort after and collectors and fans alike will pay a high price to secure a much coveted item such as an old Fitzroy Lions jumper . Will the new cartoon like logo of the Lions be as popular or collectable as the the Old Lions strip ? Only time will tell but every woolly jumper forever enshrined under glass has a story to tell which can only grow in stature as time goes by . Will they become the true legends of the game and gaze on in horror at the modern incarnations of this famed piece of sporting apparel ?

modern day west coast guernsey

[caption id="attachment_214" align="alignright" width="199" caption="old style footy jumper"][/caption]
