Long Weekend of Football

Friday, June 11th, 2010

There has been much discussion about the Queens Birthday Public Holiday, celebrated this Monday .

This is not her actual birthday , which falls in April .

Many question the relevance of supporting an archaic institution , of British Royalty , and celebrating its leaders birthday.

Republican and Humanitarian arguments aside ,footy fans are the big winners .

AFL Football matches are played , on every day of the long weekend .

Games are scheduled to begin on Friday night , continuing on Saturday and Sunday , and culminating with Monday's Game at the MCG.

Its a media , broadcasting , and footy fans feast.

Record attendances , are expected at all matches .Fans will be out in their football jumpers, jerseys , guernseys to watch their team play .

Most will be in a relaxed , party mood , knowing they have the Monday holiday to recover .

God save the Queen. ( the birthday holiday at least ! )

Football Jumpers in the NGV

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Sidney Nolan ,the famous Australian painter has an iconic painting called the " Footballer " (1946) on display at the Ian Potter Centre of the NGV .

Painted whilst Nolan lived in St Kilda it is believed to be of 1940s St Kilda legend Keith Miller .

Nolan, who died in 1992 , is no longer able to confirm of deny this.

The attendance by Nolan at the footy and his choice of subject matter prove that footy appeals to many even the artistic intelligentsia .

Nolan's work is globally respected and highly valued . His Kelly series of paintings are legendary .

AFL football as depicted in this 1940's piece proves it was a popular spectator sport even then .

Have a look at this great painting and see the early aussie rules player in his striped jumper , jersey , guernsey .

More ” Football Jumpers”

Friday, June 4th, 2010

More " Football Jumpers" are imminent with the defection from NRL and Rugby Union to AFL by high profile players Israel Folau and Karmichael Hunt .

AFL Coaches Mick Malthouse and Brad Scott believe it will be a successful transition and will encourage other players to change codes.

Former AFL player Sydney Swan Nick Davis who thought about converting to NRL from AFL in 2006 states that Rugby players train as hard as the AFL .

Supporters of both codes are confident the kicking skills needed in AFL can be learnt over a six month period.

To be a good kick you need a good technique, which can be taught.

All AFL players need to hone their skills in this area , and practice constantly

With the switch of players from NRL to AFL it poses the question will the switch work the other way ?

Can we expect to see AFL players convert to play NRL ?

Some things don't change . All players , whatever code , will wear their football jumper , jersey , guernsey to play the game in their team's colours.

Last Saturday in September

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

The AFL has announced tentative plans to Move the Grand Final from the last Saturday in September.

It gives the reasons that with two new teams joining the competition in 2011 will require the fixture to be extended .

More matches will need to be played . The number of finals series of matches will be greater .The length of the finals series will be longer .

It will seemingly be impossible for all the finals to be played throughout September . Traditionally the final series has culminated with the Grand Final being played on the last Saturday in September .

Fans and historians of the Game will be surprised if this monumental change occurs to the current AFL fixture .

Time will tell if it occurs .Fans everywhere will still come out to support their teams in their football jumper , jersey , guernsey .

Will the Grand Final still be played on the historical last saturday in september ? Will it be played on the first or second saturday in October ?

A thoughtful and practical gift idea can be a football jumper , jersey , guernsey.

Lots of people are fans of a football club .

What better idea than to give a jumper with the recipient 's favourite players number on the back .

Or to give a replica jumper that their team wore in the Grand Final.

Perhaps a gift of a jumper , jersey , guernsey the same as the one worn when your team played theirs and you attended the match together .It would make a great keepsake and momento of a fun time you shared together .

Little fans would be delighted with a jumper , jersey , guernsey to wear to the match . Or to show off in to mates , or just to play kick to kick in.

A babies jumper , jersey , guernsey would be a novel gift idea for a newborn .

It may be a nice idea to send one to a homesick expatriate Aussie who can watch the Game via cable TV in his
jumper , jersey , guernsey sent
from Oz.

The humble football jumper , jersey , guernsey is a thoughtful , inexpensive gift idea sure to impress the recipient.
