Friday, January 31st, 2014

Begs the question is it for identification purposes of trial by video ? Will it will identify on field players from each other . Fans will clearly know who they are supporting or heckling , and umpires will know who to penalise !

Where will the name go ? Above the number ? Or under the sponsor ?

Historically , many sporting codes have printed the players names on the back . The British EPL , and European Football Clubs , have done so for many years .

Does this mean the humble AFL football jumper , jersey , guernsey , is finally coming of age ?

The beleaguered Bombers , dogged by a drugs scandal , beat WCE in WA , hoping to silence critics and appease fans . Sydney beat Carlton at home in the teeming rain , and Port Power beat the Pies . The Saints got thrashed by the Tigers , and Melbourne squeeze out a 3 point victory over the Dogs . Hawks , Crows and Cats continue to win , and Kangas annihilate newcomers GWS.

Great legend of AFL Footy , Richmond Tiger , Tommy Hafey was spotted at St Kilda Beach preparing for an  early morning swim , last Sunday . His jovial reply , when queried on who would win between the Saints and Tiges , was " Saints are pretty good " An ironic response from the affable Richmond stalwart !

Others , particularly those who follow one of the  six teams , jostling for that coveted eighth spot , keep hoping . Many watched a disorganised St Kilda team , relinquish the tightly held eighth spot,  to a determined NMFC . Speculation again abounds about hiring and firings in the senior coaching positions , of several underperforming AFL Clubs .

Fans endure much for the love of their team . Miserable weather , hopeless public transport  , overcharging by the AFL , posturing by the League leaders , and the  shrinking of their beloved football jumper , jersey , guernsey after a season of pie and beer. Sledging by rival fans is usually accepted  good naturedly , and adds to the jocularity and  enjoyment of the match .

A blockbuster is planned on Friday night at the  " G " , between league heavyweights Carlton and Collingwood . Its footy,  anyone can win .
