Melbourne's, Saturday Age newspaper , reported a news story of three young Somalia men who were playing AFL football, in the amateur AFL affiliated EDFL.
Proud to wear their football jumper , jersey , guernsey , they talked of how much the sport had given them .
Two brothers and a cousin , who all were united in their love of AFL football.
They felt it was a great sport , which had provided them with many opportunities.
They saw it an opening to assimilate into Australian society , and gave them a chance to excel at a sport they have grown to love.
Playing football has helped them recover from bad memories of a war torn homeland .
As superior athletes , they are providing the AFL with a home grown success story of converts to the code .
AFL football was not a game they played in Somalia before migrating to Australia as 12 year olds.
Currently glamour and money are being used by the AFL to attract the signing of high profile recruits ,eg. Folau and Hunt .
Both are untried converts to AFL.
Its heartening to see that grass roots AFL football is still flourishing and has a lot to offer young people everywhere.
It is with pride that these young people wear their football jumper , jersey , guernsey every match day .

Proud to wear their Lions themed Football Jumper

This weekend of AFL football matches is round 11 .It is the half way mark for the 22 round season .
Teams that are clear winners are Geelong and Collingwood . There is another group of teams that are in the middle range like St Kilda and Sydney Swans .
More teams further down the League ladder eg Essendon are hoping to continue their winning form so they can play in the Finals.
Richmond Tigers languishing on the bottom of the ladder recorded their first win last weekend . It was a gritty , surprise victory over Port Power in SA at AAMI stadium in the rain .
Tipsters , amateur and professional alike are having difficulty picking winners .
Grannies in retirement homes are picking winners more accurately than the experts.
It wouldn't be AFL footy without the air of uncertainty .
Loyal fans , wearing their football jumper, jersey , guernsey attend their teams Games no matter their form ie ; Friday night's tussle between Saints and Tigers is believed to be a sell-out.
Whatever its outcome the fans come dressed in their football jumper to watch one of the greatest spectacles in the world.
The humble footy match .

There are three styles of modern jumper , jersey , guernsey .
The sleeveless style which has no sleeves .
The long sleeve style which has long sleeves .
And the short sleeve style which has short sleeves.
Few players wear long sleeve jumpers in the modern game .
Memorable players who wore one in recent times were Matthew Lapin ,Carlton Blues player . Another famous wearer was James Hird , Essendon Bombers Captain.
Most modern players wear the sleeveless style.
This is in stark contrast to the old style players who mainly wore long sleeve woolly jumpers , jerseys , guernseys.
The short sleeve style of jumper , jersey , guernsey is usually worn for training purposes.
Sleeveless , long sleeved , or short sleeved ?
A football jumper , jersey , guernsey is usually worn with pride whatever the style .

Why do we follow the teams we do ?
Often , it is family tradition that dictates which team we support.
The person who takes us to the footy
when we we are young can decide who we will barrack for .
A young man may barrack for the team they played with in an amateur league or at senior level who is affiliated with a particular afl club.
Geographical location may dictate who you will barrack for .If you live in Carlton does it follow that you will go for the Blues?
Peer group pressure and wanting to follow the same team as your friends might decide who you follow. Also if you want to go the footy you will go with fans of the same club , sit together and wear your similiar football jumper , jersey , guernsey .
Clubs under threat of amalgamation , annihilation or extinction call on fans loyalty to the jumper , jersey , guernsey .
The colours of your clubs jumper , jersey , guernsey can ignite passion and instill loyalty no matter who you follow .
Its tribal , its colourful , its passionate and there is no more brilliant sight than a sea of fans in the colours of your clubs jumper , jersey , guernsey .
Every supporter has a reason why they follow who they do .
All are valid . All fans look and feel good in their team colours jumper , jersey , guernsey .
Dust the mothballs of Grandpa's old Geelong jumper. Wash out Uncle Bill's Essendon Jersey .Get your jumper you wore as a skinny teenager down from the top shelf and get to the footy .
Your jumper , jersey , guernsey will enjoy going to the footy again .You will be pleased to evoke a few old memories of a bygone era if you can stand the overpowering stench of the mothballs!

Are you a Bulldog?
