Saturday Afternoon Football

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

A crowd of almost 82,000 , went to the MCG last Saturday afternoon , to watch , the Collingwood versus St Kilda Game .

It was a massive crowd,  for a typical , home and away clash of the Season. Fans love Saturday Afternoon Footy. They go in their football jumpers, jerseys, guernseys , to enjoy the Game.

The AFL , could schedule more Games, for a Saturday afternoon in Melbourne ,at either of the stadiums .

Collingwood Magpies , who have the most financial members in the AFL ,possibly comprised up to 50,000 fans.

The rest , whether Saints fans,  or just lovers of AFL football, voted with their feet . Hopefully the AFL , will take notice .

AFL Football Players and the Media

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Most AFL football players,  enjoy a harmonious relationship, with the media.

Games are reported on , players injuries detailed, and the highs , and lows of a players career , all make good copy .

The supporters insatiable appetite, for all things related to their sport, is quenched on a daily basis, by these media reports.

Continual scrutiny , and reporting by the media, helps fuel interest , and provide accurate information .

Its hard to know when this coverage crosses the line , and becomes invasive for players and their families.

Fans , love to hear about their team, and it's players. Dredging up past misdemeanours , and constantly giving it media coverage, may be detrimental to them , and place the game in a poor light.

Supporters love the game ,their club ,and its players .They will go to watch in their football jumpers, jerseys, guernseys ,when they can . Many enjoy the live televising and replay of afl clashes.

Other issues will be dealt with fairly by the appropriate authorities.

Fans just want to have fun .

Julia and the Bulldogs

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

On a cold , wet , wintry night at the MCG , the Bulldogs were denied victory by the Hawks.

In a hotly contested Game , the Hawks , triumphed over the Dogs , by three points .

Even new PM,  Julia Gillard's support,  couldn't  help the Western Bulldogs to victory .

Perhaps they need to fly her in for every game , to give them a morale boosting presence.

The Western Bulldogs , gallant in defeat , couldn't halt the marauding Hawthorn Hawks , who have now won 7 matches in a row.

Fans turned out in their jumpers , jerseys , guernseys to watch the match .
It was AFL football at its best , as the two closely matched rivals , fought for ascendancy .

The Hawks , were lucky to prevail , and come out winners , at the match's conclusion.

Thursday Night Football

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

The AFL,  have scheduled a football match , for this Thursday night .

The Carlton Blues , play the Brisbane Lions , in  Etihad Stadium ,  at 7.10pm .

Local popular side  Carlton , play rival interstate side , Brisbane.

Another clever marketing innovation , by the AFL , to get fans at games , mid week?

Will fans turn out on thursday night, in their  , jumpers , jerseys , guernseys , to watch the Game?

Interestingly , of the 8 games in this round  , 3 home games are to be played at Etihad Stadium , compared to only 2 , to be played at the MCG.

Currently, the Australian Socceroos, are competing in the FIFA World Cup Series 2010, in South Africa .

Australian Football Top

Competing teams , in this World Cup,  play with a round ball , and have a different set of rules , and objectives, to  AFL Football.
Many European , Asian , African , and Pacific nations eg: Australia and New Zealand , are playing  .

Some things , don't change with the different code , of Football .

Referees, will always make unfavourable decisions , against players eg witness Tim Cahill's , sending off the ground , in the second half of the match , Australia VS Germany , on Sunday night .

Fans everywhere, will always wear their team's,  football jumper , jersey , guernsey , to watch the match, and support their team .

Blame it on the Jumper

Monday, June 14th, 2010

The Australian Socceroos, were soundly defeated by Germany, 4 -0 in their opening round game , of the World Cup .

The Socceroos, minus Harry Kewell, who was selected on the bench, received a further blow when striker , Tim Cahill, was sent off, in the second half with a red card .

Sleepy fans , ( many got up at 4.30am EST to watch the game ),outplayed Socceroos team members , and befuddled coaches and managers alike, are dismayed .

Some poor decisions were made , in hindsight .

Not the least of which , was the style , of the Australian , team jumper , jersey , guernsey .

Fair enough , have the Australian Coat of Arms , but the footy jumper , jersey , guernsey , was a bit on the drab side .

Why, weren't they playing in a colourful, streamlined , beautifully crafted , piece of apparel , like the modern day , AFL football jumper ?

I blame their lack of success on the jumper !

Long Weekend of Football

Friday, June 11th, 2010

There has been much discussion about the Queens Birthday Public Holiday, celebrated this Monday .

This is not her actual birthday , which falls in April .

Many question the relevance of supporting an archaic institution , of British Royalty , and celebrating its leaders birthday.

Republican and Humanitarian arguments aside ,footy fans are the big winners .

AFL Football matches are played , on every day of the long weekend .

Games are scheduled to begin on Friday night , continuing on Saturday and Sunday , and culminating with Monday's Game at the MCG.

Its a media , broadcasting , and footy fans feast.

Record attendances , are expected at all matches .Fans will be out in their football jumpers, jerseys , guernseys to watch their team play .

Most will be in a relaxed , party mood , knowing they have the Monday holiday to recover .

God save the Queen. ( the birthday holiday at least ! )

Muticulturalism and the Football Jumper

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Melbourne's, Saturday Age newspaper , reported a news story of three young Somalia men who were playing AFL football, in the amateur AFL affiliated EDFL.

Proud to wear their football jumper , jersey , guernsey , they talked of how much the sport had given them .

Two brothers and a cousin , who all were united in their love of AFL football.

They felt it was a great sport , which had provided them with many opportunities.

They saw it an opening to assimilate into Australian society , and gave them a chance to excel at a sport they have grown to love.

Playing football has helped them recover from bad memories of a war torn homeland .

As superior athletes , they are providing the AFL with a home grown success story of converts to the code .

AFL football was not a game they played in Somalia before migrating to Australia as 12 year olds.

Currently glamour and money are being used by the AFL to attract the signing of high profile recruits ,eg. Folau and Hunt .

Both are untried converts to AFL.

Its heartening to see that grass roots AFL football is still flourishing and has a lot to offer young people everywhere.

It is with pride that these young people wear their football jumper , jersey , guernsey every match day .
