Collingwood and Melbourne Draw

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Its a rare occurrence , in an AFL football match , when the result is a draw ,  between the two rival teams.

This is what resulted, from the Melbourne Demons and Collingwood Magpies Game, on Monday at the MCG.

Fans witnessed a titanic struggle , between the two sides . Last time they played , earlier in the year , the struggling Demons , beat the premiership contenders Collingwood .

Hoping to do it again , the young Demons , put up a good fight .

Fans , barracking, in their football jumpers , jerseys , guernseys ,were thrilled ,on their public holiday Monday , to witness an exciting conflict .

Neither team , ultimately , was able to prevail over the other to eke out a victory . Tired players failed , to kick an elusive score, in the dying minutes of the game .

Fittingly, both teams were rewarded , with an even distribution of the premiership points , two each .

Collingwood's inaccurate kicking, and the young demons tenacious spirit ,resulted in a rare conclusion to the match , a draw, nothing separating either side .

Disappointed players , but excited fans , have indelible memories , of this historic game .

Could this be the start of more Monday night Games ?

The AFL has to find new ways to extend the fixture . A match played on a Monday night might be a viable option.

Confusion of the Pink Jumper

Monday, May 10th, 2010

On Friday night the Melbourne Demons wore a pink yoke on their jumper instead of the traditional red .They also wore pink socks to promote Breast Cancer Network Australia.

The field umpires also wore a pink top and dark blue shorts to show their support.

Melbourne player Clint Bartram handballed to an umpire believing he was passing the ball to a teammate.

Poor visibility and similarity of dress created confusion.

Did it cost Melbourne the Game in a tight finish.?

Fans wore their jumper , jersey , guernsey to the Match .

The pink jumpers , jerseys , guernseys will be auctioned as a fundraiser for the BreastCancer Cause .

Over time they will become collectibles.

Monday Night Footy

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

St Kilda Saints play Carlton Blues on Monday night 10 May at Etihad Stadium . The match starts at 7.20 pm and will be televised .

It's a bold marketing move by the AFL in a bid to attract  greater attendance figures and put  more bums on seats .

The choice of a game during the week as opposed to weekends , friday night or public holidays is a relatively new initiative .

Both clubs enjoy a large supporter fan base .

Some reports in the media have shown stories of younger fans being unable to attend as it is a school night .

Older fans may be absent due to work commitments.

The AFL , whilst continually developing and looking at new ways to attract supporters will be mindful of this .

Will it be financially rewarding  for the two clubs who are hoping to attract high attendance figures and a hefty revenue payment  for the media broadcast?

Whether they are at the Match or watching it at home fans will be dressed in their football jumper , jersey , guernsey to support their teams.

Rivalry Round ?

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

This weekends rounds of AFL matches were once touted by the AFL as rivalry round between traditional rivals.

Fans support their clubs by attending games wearing their football jumper, jersey , guernsey.

Clubs play each other every weekend .

All are rivals.

Even the clubs in South and Western Australia who have not been in the competition as long as the Eastern States are traditional rivals.

Friday nights game between the Saints and Bulldogs saw a miraculous victory to the Saints . This match was for the Trevor Barker / Ted Whitten trophy . Two great champions of their respective clubs who both tragically died of cancer.

The Essendon and Hawthorn match had all the makings of a bitter struggle particularly in view of last years spiteful clash .

Essendon won . Some fiery incidents will be dealt with appropriately in the tribunal.

Isn't it better to honour former players and remember noteworthy achievements . Why promote and commemorate past nasty encounters to meet media expectations?
