The changing colour of an AFL Football Jumper

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

The humble AFL Football Jumper is no more . Packaged in aerodynamic fabric , now the traditional colours have changed . Carlton, won in the baby blue again last night , and the Tigers replacement of their traditional sash , with a dreamtime painting last weekend , has made the jumpers a highly sought after item .

Melbourne Demons , are yet to replicate their hot pink strip , of a few years ago, which they  wore as a Breast Cancer fundraiser , but it appears the skys the limit as to who adopts what strip when .

Collingwood , are sticking doggedly to their black and white though. Ironic really , as Nicky Winnar , great indigenous Sainter , lifted his footy jumper,  to show his black skin , in the last game the Magpies played against the Saints , at Victoria Park.

Glory Days

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Melbourne Football Club ,(aka , the Demons ), are the oldest football club, playing in the current AFL competition .

Established in 1859 , they celebrated their 150 year anniversary, last year in 2009.

In 1859 ,two months after Melbourne , the Geelong Football Club, joined the competition .

Called the Victorian Football League, or VFL, it was based in Victoria .

Carlton joined the League in 1864 , North Melbourne in 1869 and Essendon , St Kilda and Hawthorn all joined in 1873.

All, have pursued the ultimate trophy , of a Premiership ,with varying degrees of success.

All , have a proud history , of playing AFL football.

Fans , love their club , their support is tribal ,and will come to watch them play , win , lose , or draw.

Perhaps the only difference between the 1800's crowds, and today's, apart from numbers , is that modern fans, wear their  football jumpers, jerseys ,guernseys to the Game.

Collingwood and Melbourne Draw

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Its a rare occurrence , in an AFL football match , when the result is a draw ,  between the two rival teams.

This is what resulted, from the Melbourne Demons and Collingwood Magpies Game, on Monday at the MCG.

Fans witnessed a titanic struggle , between the two sides . Last time they played , earlier in the year , the struggling Demons , beat the premiership contenders Collingwood .

Hoping to do it again , the young Demons , put up a good fight .

Fans , barracking, in their football jumpers , jerseys , guernseys ,were thrilled ,on their public holiday Monday , to witness an exciting conflict .

Neither team , ultimately , was able to prevail over the other to eke out a victory . Tired players failed , to kick an elusive score, in the dying minutes of the game .

Fittingly, both teams were rewarded , with an even distribution of the premiership points , two each .

Collingwood's inaccurate kicking, and the young demons tenacious spirit ,resulted in a rare conclusion to the match , a draw, nothing separating either side .

Disappointed players , but excited fans , have indelible memories , of this historic game .

No longer uniquely Melbourne ?

Melbourne Demons , the new dream team of the AFL, beat Port Adelaide Power at the weekend’s exhibition football match in Darwin .

Fans came out in their thousands dressed in their football jumpers , jerseys, guernseys . They  supported their team and were rewarded with a very entertaining game of football.

A one point victory to the previously struggling Demons thrilled and entertained a footy starved crowd in the NT.

Melbourne held off a fast finishing Port Power team .

A titanic struggle created scintillating footy as the Vics prevailed over the South Australians.

Is the stage set for the NT to provide their own AFL team to join the national competition?

Weekend Games

Monday, May 17th, 2010

The pressure to succeed and the unpredictability of the modern AFL game was never more evident than in last weekends round of matches .

The Cats thrashed the Lions at the Gabba', Western Bulldogs beat in form team Sydney and the Saints suffered their third loss in a row to a speedy , youthful Bombers side .

The Richmond Tigers looked poised to breakthrough with their first win of the 2010 season only to have it snatched away by their Hawthorn opponents in the dying moments of the game.

A  youthful Melbourne Demons team were no match for a rejuvenated West Coast Eagles who beat them soundly at the MCG.

Interstate results saw Carlton hold off Port Power at AAMI stadium and the Collingwood Magpies beat vastly improved Fremantle Dockers at Subiaco.

Many fans, tipsters and media commentators would have expected different results to those posted in this round of matches .

Fans were out everywhere in their jumpers , jerseys , guernseys to cheer their team on and to will them to succeed.

Confusion of the Pink Jumper

Monday, May 10th, 2010

On Friday night the Melbourne Demons wore a pink yoke on their jumper instead of the traditional red .They also wore pink socks to promote Breast Cancer Network Australia.

The field umpires also wore a pink top and dark blue shorts to show their support.

Melbourne player Clint Bartram handballed to an umpire believing he was passing the ball to a teammate.

Poor visibility and similarity of dress created confusion.

Did it cost Melbourne the Game in a tight finish.?

Fans wore their jumper , jersey , guernsey to the Match .

The pink jumpers , jerseys , guernseys will be auctioned as a fundraiser for the BreastCancer Cause .

Over time they will become collectibles.
