Stkilda have played in a purple guernsey to highlight captain, Nick Riewoldt's sister Maddie, and her fatal battle with cancer. All clubs have participated in the Dreamtime series of guernseys to show respect, and honour the contribution that indigenous players have made to AFL football.

Carlton Football Club started the trend of wearing non traditional jumpers back in 1997, when they donned a light blue guernsey, to celebrate the launch of a new flavour of M&M. They were a CFC sponsor at that time.

Anzac day matches have been addressed by the clubs wearing an Anzac insignia or logo on the front of the guernsey, as  worn in the Saints versus Swans, Anzac day game in New Zealand. Collingwood and Essendon have a badge on the front of their guernseys to commenorate the diggers for their epic Anzac day clash at the MCG.

Clash of Jumpers

Monday, March 31st, 2014

Gorgeous autumn weather drew big crowds to the footy in Melbourne over the weekend . Several close finishes thrilled fans who revelled in the sunshine and fast paced action. The Demons played the Eagles on Saturday night at the MCG , a  game which saw both teams play in dark blue football jumpers . A navy blue home strip was worn by the Demons , and a dark blue clash strip was worn by the Eagles .

Surely a better choice would,ve been for the Eagles to wear white or yellow guernseys , under lights , at night ? Several Demons players hand - balled to the opposition on a least two occasions in the second quarter . It didn't affect the result of the game , but the AFL need to adopt a pragmatic approach to the wearing of home and away strips  , of teams football jumpers , jerseys , guernseys.

Tuesday, August 6th, 2013

Its raining goals as the Tigers beat the Hawks,  at a soaking MCG , on Saturday . Jubilant fans sat through the deluge of goals and rain to belt out the club song over and over again at the end of the game . Its been a long time coming , and the Tiger army is massing for a huge assault in September . As that great Tiger , Captain Blood was fond of saying Richmond "eat ' em alive ". Richmond Football Jumpers , Jerseys , Guernseys , are popular items .

NMFC ground out a thrilling win against another top side , the Cats , on friday night footy at Etihad . Its Round 19 and anything goes as both wins proved that the top teams are not undefeatable . GWS finally broke through to clinch their first victory of the season,  by thrashing down and out  Melbourne . Sydney , Collingwood , and Freo keep winning , but Carlton poised in ninth spot put up a lacklustre performance . StKilda continue to disappoint , whilst Port  impress. The Lions and Eagles persist , and the Doggies keep trying , whilst Essendon's form is inconsistent , a reflection of their club's turmoil as they continue to refute drug taking allegations .

Footy Legends

Monday, May 6th, 2013

I went and saw the stage show " Barassi " at the weekend .Followers of  VFL / AFL football are familiar with this name . What prompted me to go was seeing Ron Barassiwalking along the beach path at Elwood beach with a few of his pals . He had a determined stride and had raised a sweat on the cool autumn morning . The show encompassed his life achievements in football , including playing and coaching Melbourne Football Club , his  secession to Carlton , premiership victory at North Melbourne and trailblazing at the Sydney Swans . Many vintage football jumpers , jerseys , guernseys , were used in the production , well loved relics of a golden past and as tribute to a dead set footy legend .

Elsewhere Barassi 's first team the Demons were thrashed by his second the Blues . Perhaps the Dees need some Barass magic at the moment ! Saints run of losses continued , as did the Lions , Suns , Tigers , GWS , Crows and Bulldogs . Bombers and Cats rule on top of ladder with no losses followed by Power , Swans and Hawks with only one loss ,then come  Freo , Magpies and  Blues taking up remaining spots in the eight .

The SA teams and Qld teams provided close matchups playing each other at home in their respective states .

Melbourne and Greater Western Sydney were thrashed , and both teams possibly need assistance to become more competitive . The Richmond juggernaut continues with three wins in a row , and jubilant fans are hoping their beloved team can avoid the dreaded ninth spot , at the end of the season .

The huge Anzac Day match is coming up between old combatants Collingwood and Essendon , both teams hoping to thrill fans with a close contest and ultimate  victory .Besieged coach of the Bombers , James Hird has been the subject of much scrutiny in recent days as has Nathan Buckley's comments surrounding the Collingwood football team .
